Rita Bravo is a poet from Faro, Algarve, who became national poetry slam champion in 2025. She has represented Portugal at the World Championship in Paris and is preparing to participate in the European Championship in Graz, Austria, in November. Her poetic work includes the projects C(ALMA) and IN(QUIETA), which reflect her connection to the Algarve nature and the experience of living in Lisbon and Krakow.
In the interview with POSTAL, Rita Bravo spoke about her artistic identity, marked by the contrast between the calm and contemplation of the Algarve and the restlessness of cities. She grew up surrounded by nature outside the center of Faro, where she wrote her first poem at age ten, about a flower from her garden. The experience of living in other cities revealed another kind of beauty to her, linked to chaos and movement, which eventually entered her writing.
Rita Bravo argues that the poem gains body on stage through voice, breath, and gesture, transforming into an encounter with the audience. Regarding the recognition she has received, including literary distinctions and a creation grant, she says she tries to separate writing from the pursuit of validation, writing because she needs to write. Slam taught her that competing can mean challenging oneself and testing the limits of language.
Beyond artistic creation, Rita Bravo promotes community initiatives such as Poets Wanted, workshops with young people, and a social innovation incubator in Faro. She is about to begin a master's degree in Creative Processes and wishes to build a path that crosses poetry, performance, music, and community work from the Algarve, creating conditions that make it possible to develop art and community in the region.
