The head of the PSP's Foreigners and Borders Unit (UNEF), João Ribeiro, rejected the idea that there is immigrant hunting in Portugal. In a comment on this police unit's actions, Ribeiro defended that UNEF does not practice any type of persecution of foreign citizens.
João Ribeiro explained that UNEF practices "an intelligent approach" in fulfilling its functions. According to the official, the unit considers that a foreign citizen in an irregular situation in Portugal "cannot be in national territory".
According to the official, UNEF's main concern is that foreign citizens in irregular situations "enter a removal process". This removal process represents the central objective of the work developed by this unit of the Public Security Police.
