Gang arrested for stealing cell phones at Rock in Rio; group came from Belém

oglobo12 September 2026 at 22:05

Four people were arrested in the act last Friday (11) on charges of serial cell phone thefts during Rock in Rio. According to the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, the criminals acted together and posed as festival attendees to approach victims and take the devices without them noticing.

The arrests were made by agents from the Delegation for the Repression of Crimes Against Intellectual Property (DRCPIM) and the 16th Police Station (Barra da Tijuca), which investigated the gang's activity at the event. Stolen cell phones were recovered and part of them, according to the department, was returned to their owners less than an hour after the crimes.

The Civil Police report that the four arrested individuals are from Belém, in Pará. Charged in the act with qualified theft and criminal association, the criminals are being investigated for other similar crimes committed in previous editions of the festival.

Why this matters

The arrest of the gang from Belém is relevant for Rock in Rio attendees, as it shows that the event organization and the police worked to curb property crimes during the festival. For those who attended or plan to attend large events, this case reinforces the importance of being extra careful with personal belongings in crowded environments, since the gang used proximity techniques to act without leaving immediate traces.
