The Socialist Party held a Local Government Convention on Saturday in Leiria, which was attended by around a thousand local officials. The event served as a platform for the PS to present its proposals for the financial decentralization of municipalities.
The PS advocates that the income tax and VAT revenue delivered to local authorities should be doubled, meaning municipalities should receive a larger share of the taxes collected from their residents. This proposal aims to strengthen the financial autonomy of local governments.
Another measure advocated by the party is that municipalities should have a share of the profits generated by renewable energy installed in their territories. This demand arises in the context of significant growth in the green energy sector in Portugal.
The PS Local Government Convention in Leiria brought together local officials from across the country to debate and align positions on decentralization and funding for local authorities, at a time when the question of regionalization and local power continues to be debated in Portugal.
