Guimarães and Hungary Open Doors for Strategic Cooperation and Twinning

Mais Guimarães12 September 2026 at 20:00

The municipality of Guimarães and a delegation from Hungary met at the Paços do Concelho to discuss possible forms of strategic cooperation between the two countries. During the meeting, several areas of potential collaboration were identified, including economy, industry, science, technology, innovation, culture, tourism and sustainability.

One of the main objectives of the meeting was to find a Hungarian city with complementary characteristics to Guimarães for a possible twinning relationship. Academic and technological cooperation received particular attention, with a focus on engineering, aeronautics and the space sector, with concrete opportunities for rapprochement between universities, researchers and companies being considered.

Guimarães' distinction as European Green Capital 2026 opened possibilities for exchanging experiences and good practices in environmental, energy and urban sustainability areas with Hungary. Culture and tourism were also identified as privileged sectors for rapprochement, through cultural initiatives, gastronomy and tourism promotion.

During the meeting, Ricardo Araújo presented Guimarães' journey, highlighting its historical and cultural heritage, industrial tradition and growing investment in innovation and economic diversification.

Why this matters

Readers from Guimarães and northern Portugal directly benefit from this initiative, as a possible twinning with a Hungarian city can bring concrete opportunities for cooperation between universities, researchers and companies, enhancing knowledge and innovation as drivers of economic development. The article follows Guimarães' distinction as European Green Capital 2026 and the growing municipal investment in economic diversification and innovation.

Image of the day | Ball Game or Game of Souls of the Conventual Orchard

The Convent of Mafra, ordered to be built by King John V in the 18th century, was for decades one of the largest Franciscan convents on the Iberian Peninsula, housing hundreds of friars. Beyond the life of prayer and study, the friars had moments of fellowship, including the habit of playing ball in the conventual Orchard, currently called the Garden of the Enclosure. In this space there was an area dedicated to the Ball Game (also known as the Game of Souls), where the friars played Ball, Little Orange and Hoop. From this site, the original stone benches are still preserved, and the image was captured during a historical reenactment held in that space.
