Number of dead in ferry fire in the Philippines rises to 67; 12 still missing

oglobo12 September 2026 at 16:54

The death toll from a ferry fire in the Philippines rose to 76 on Saturday, after the coast guard confirmed the discovery of 41 more bodies aboard the burned vessel. Thirty passengers, including two Chilean citizens, and 13 crew members were rescued, according to the coast guard. Authorities estimate that some 12 people remain missing.

The remains of the passengers will be taken to a port in Coron, in Palawan province, coast guard spokesperson Noemie Cayabyab said in a statement. Hours earlier, AFP followed disaster agency workers transporting coffins to a cemetery in the tourist town. The coffins will be used for the temporary burial of the victims of the fire that destroyed the M/V June Aster on Wednesday.

Why this matters

The disaster directly affects families of passengers and crew, with dozens of dead and missing still being searched for. This is one of the worst recent maritime accidents in the Philippines, raising questions about ferry safety in the region.
