Family members of people who were imprisoned at the Tarrafal Concentration Camp, in Cape Verde, after April 25, 1974, signed a petition to denounce the conditions and circumstances of the detentions.
The petition aims to denounce that dozens of people remained detained in Tarrafal without ever having been convicted by a court. In many cases, those detained were not even formally charged with any crime.
Tarrafal was used by the Estado Novo regime to imprison political opponents. After April 25, the date of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, some political prisoners continued to be held at the camp, which the petition's signatories consider an extended injustice.
The family members want the illegal situation in which these prisoners were held to be officially recognized, demanding justice and acknowledgment of the human rights violations that occurred.
