The Medical Association (OM) presented a set of proposals in several areas with the objective of placing doctors in underserved areas of the country. The organization intends to counter what it considers an insufficient response to the difficulties of attracting and retaining health professionals in these areas.
According to the OM, Portugal has responded too frequently with "piecemeal, temporary and reactive measures" to the difficulties of placing doctors in underserved territories. This fragmented approach has proven to be ineffective in resolving the structural problem of the unequal distribution of doctors across the national territory.
The proposals presented by the Medical Association cover various areas of intervention, seeking to offer more comprehensive and lasting solutions than the measures implemented so far. The objective is to create conditions that encourage doctors to remain and practice in these most underserved areas.
This initiative arises in the context of growing concern about the lack of doctors in various regions of the country, particularly in inland and less attractive areas, where the shortage of health professionals affects the quality of care provided to the population.
