UMAR alerted to the difficulties in accessing Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy in Portugal, defending that VIP consultations should be available in health centers and that it is necessary to hire doctors who are not conscientious objectors. The founder of the organization stressed that the current situation creates significant barriers for women who wish to exercise their right.
The UMAR responsible also criticized the tendency of the National Health Service to increasingly refer VIP-related responses to the private sector. According to the organization, this situation compromises universality and equity in access to reproductive healthcare.
The alert comes in a context where practical difficulties persist for women who wish to terminate a pregnancy in Portugal, particularly outside major urban centers. The lack of available professionals in public services continues to be a significant obstacle.
