'Brother' and 'friend': Federal Police expose relationship between Castro and Vorcaro and Rioprevidência contributions to Master following luxury meetings

cbn12 September 2026 at 15:11

The Federal Police analyzed the cell phone of Daniel Bueno Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, and discovered a close relationship between the banker and the former governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro. Investigators found messages with a personal tone, meetings at private residences, luxury dinners in New York, and invitations to private events. Castro's contact was saved on Vorcaro's phone as "CLAUDIO CASTRO" and had been created on May 12, 2023, the month when the two were already discussing a dinner.

The information is in reports and documents whose secrecy was lifted by Justice André Mendonça of the Federal Supreme Court, at the request of Court President Edson Fachin. CBN had access to the full documents. The Federal Police indicate that the closeness between the two and the meetings with luxurious benefits may have facilitated the Rioprevidência contributions to Banco Master.

According to the Federal Police, the friendship between Vorcaro and Castro began before the Rioprevidência funds entered Banco Master. Investigators are seeking to understand whether this personal relationship influenced the investment decisions that benefited the financial institution.

Why this matters

Rio de Janeiro readers are directly affected because the Rioprevidência resources, a pension fund for state employees, are suspected of having been directed to Banco Master through political influence. The investigation reveals a possible scheme of closeness between the former governor and the banker that preceded the questioned investments, potentially harming public coffers and the pension fund beneficiaries.
