Injured rescued leopard escapes cage and attacks forest guard

extra12 September 2026 at 15:00

An injured leopard that had been rescued in a forest in Nepal managed to escape from the cage where it was being held and attacked a forest guard in Besishahar, in Lamjung district. The incident occurred on September 10 and was captured on video. The sick animal, which had been sedated, suddenly opened the cage door and lunged at Buddhijung Gurung, 57 years old.

In the footage, the officer can be seen fighting the leopard while a colleague tries to strike the animal with a metal bar. People around screamed in terror as they fled the scene. The leopard knocked over a motorcycle, which briefly trapped the animal, but it broke free and began threatening other people nearby, who retreated in fear.

Buddhijung Gurung suffered injuries to his left hand and face and was rushed to Besisahar Provincial Hospital, police said. The animal has not yet been recaptured, according to the newspaper "Sun". Since Besishahar is a busy market area, there was great turmoil among the region's residents.

Why this matters

Residents and visitors in the Besishahar area face immediate risk while the leopard remains loose in the region. The attack highlights the dangers faced by forest guards dealing with injured wild animals, as well as alerting to the need for stricter safety protocols in wildlife handling in the region.
