Hugo Nunes, a leader of the CHEGA party, warned this Saturday during the Harvest Festival that the traditional vines of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, in Madeira, risk completely disappearing within a decade. The political leader considers this situation results from failures in the Regional Government's agricultural policy.
Hugo Nunes's main alert focuses on the lack of incentives that would allow adequate income to be guaranteed for wine producers in the region. Without these supports, the leader argues, it becomes impossible to maintain traditional wine-growing activity and attract new generations to the sector.
The leader also left harsh criticisms of the Regional Executive's agricultural policy, considering that it has not responded to the needs of local producers. The Harvest Festival was described by Hugo Nunes as an important moment of celebration of Madeiran tradition, although he warned that the event should not serve merely to disguise the structural problems affecting the sector.
