One year after it was confirmed that Portugal could receive more than 5.8 billion euros in loans for defense, the country has still not managed to close a financing agreement with the European Commission. Negotiations between Lisbon and Brussels are ongoing, without a final understanding having been reached.
The Ministry of Defense, led by Nuno Melo, maintains the expectation that the first funds from the SAFE program will arrive in Portugal next October. This is the target set by the government for receiving the initial tranche of European funds destined for the defense sector.
The resources are part of the European financial support mechanism for defense, which aims to strengthen the military capabilities of member states. The amount of more than 5.8 billion euros represents significant financing for the modernization and acquisition of military equipment in Portugal.
Despite the delay in formalizing the agreement, the Portuguese government has already begun the investment process in defense capabilities. Portugal will begin bearing the costs of investments still during the current year, awaiting the subsequent reimbursement of eligible expenses by Brussels.
