Two young women, one dream, one mission: Margarida and Mónica are now firefighters

Rádio Campanário12 September 2026 at 12:00

Margarida Correia and Mónica Casqueira were promoted from trainees to official firefighters of the Arraiolos Fire Brigade, in a ceremony filled with emotion that marked a new stage in their lives. The two young women exchanged a joyful hug after the promotion, symbolizing the fulfillment of a dream and the beginning of a new mission in service to the community.

Margarida Correia, 24 years old, joined the Arraiolos Fire Brigade following a promise made to Hugo Pontes, the former commander of the corps, who died in June 2024 from sudden illness. The young woman promised him that, when he was commander, she would join the fire brigade, a promise she fulfilled in 2025.

During the ceremony, Margarida had Maria do Céu Grilo as her promotion sponsor, while Mónica had Luís Grilo as her sponsor. Family members, friends and members of the corps were present at this moment of recognition of the learning journey, dedication and commitment of the two young women.

Both believe that what began as a personal commitment has become a genuine desire to serve others. Margarida stated in an interview with Rádio Campanário that she feels fulfilled knowing that this moment also represents the fulfillment of Hugo Pontes's dream, who, although no longer physically present, remains deeply present in her life.

Why this matters

For readers in the Arraiolos region, this news is relevant because it marks the reinforcement of the Arraiolos Fire Brigade with two new members, at a time when the corps feels the absence of former commander Hugo Pontes, whose memory is evoked through Margarida's journey. The local community thus follows the transition of two young trainees to full firefighters, symbolizing the voluntary commitment to protecting the region.
