The Paraguayan Football Federation announced the renewal of coach Gustavo Alfaro's contract until 2030. The 64-year-old Argentine was the main responsible for leading Paraguay back to the World Cup after an absence of 16 years. The agreement was disclosed by the federation president, Robert Harrison, on social media, who posted a photograph showing Alfaro holding a national team shirt with the number referring to the next World Cup, accompanied by the message "2030, it's done!".
The coach's stay was not guaranteed after Paraguay's elimination to France in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. Alfaro left doubts about his future after the match, but eventually reached an agreement to lead the team for another cycle.
Paraguay returned to the World Cup this year after missing the previous three editions. The last participation had occurred in 2010, in South Africa, when the national team reached the quarter-finals and was eliminated by Spain, the future champions.
