Prime Minister Montenegro publicly acknowledged that education in Portugal has lost quality and rigor in recent years, taking a self-critical position regarding the current state of education in the country. The admission comes at a time when the Executive seeks to demonstrate awareness of the problems affecting the Portuguese educational system.
The head of Government pointed to the results of the PISA tests as evidence of the deterioration of teaching quality, using these international data as a reference to substantiate his concerns. The results of these tests have been frequently used to compare the educational performance of different countries.
To reverse this situation, Montenegro guaranteed that the Executive is adopting a set of concrete measures. Among the main priorities are the valorization of teachers, the requalification of schools, and changes in school curricula, thus seeking to address the identified causes of the loss of quality in education.
