The Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, located at the site of Moreno in the upper areas of Santa Cruz, celebrates its annual feast on 8 September. The chapel, surrounded by flagpoles, flags, flowers and lighting, constitutes a meeting point for the local community, which continues to climb to Moreno to participate in the celebrations.
The history of this private chapel dates back to 1690, when canon Manuel Ferreira Teixeira Caiado, then vicar of Santa Cruz, ordered the construction of the hermitage dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Over time, dependencies linked to the agricultural estate, the organization of the feast and the presence of the family arose around the chapel, forming the small manor house that today completes that place.
In September 1990, the chapel celebrated the 300th anniversary of its founding with the presence of the bishop of Funchal, D. Teodoro de Faria. Although the chapel is linked to a family, it has never distanced itself from the community, the parish and the diocese.
In July 2018, the image of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, a 19th-century piece of sacred art, was stolen from inside the chapel, along with other objects. In September 2020, a carefully executed replica returned the representation of Nossa Senhora to the altar, allowing devotion to continue and demonstrating how a tradition can be wounded without ceasing to remain alive.
