The president of Chega, André Ventura, challenged the secretary-general of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, this Friday to reduce VAT on fuel from the current 23% to the intermediate rate of 13%. In statements to journalists in Cascais, Ventura considered this measure a "historic opportunity" to resolve the issue directly in Parliament, calling on Carneiro's political courage.
Chega presented a bill with this proposal to reduce VAT on fuel, which will be debated in the Assembly of the Republic on September 24. Together with this initiative, the party also presented a zero VAT proposal for essential food goods.
Ventura emphasized that if Carneiro is "a man of his word," he should take this opportunity in Parliament to approve the measure. The challenge comes in a context of debate about the cost of living and fiscal pressure on Portuguese families.
