Publications: Book presentation with 408 photographs from the Fatima Sanctuary Archive

Agência ECCLESIA12 September 2026 at 09:17

The book "Fátíma written with light", authored by photographer Luís Pavão, was presented on September 12 at 5:00 PM in the foyer of the Pastoral Centre of Paul VI, at the Sanctuary of Fatima, in Cova da Iria. The presentation session featured the author and was moderated by Marco Daniel Duarte, director of the Academy of Studies of the Sanctuary of Fatima, who also wrote the preface of the work.

The publication, part of the Art and Heritage collection, brings together 408 photographs selected from the Archive of the Sanctuary of Fatima. The images, by various photographers, document pilgrims, crowds, moments of devotion, transformations of the Sanctuary, and different social and human dimensions associated with Cova da Iria, proposing a visual journey through over a century of the Fatima phenomenon.

The work is organized in five chronological chapters covering the period from 1917 to 2021, and also includes a thematic chapter dedicated to the travels of the Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima, which began in 1947.

The selection of photographs results from the in-depth knowledge that Luís Pavão developed about the Sanctuary's photographic collection. Between 1999 and 2005, the photographer advised the then Audiovisual Unit of the Archive of the Sanctuary of Fatima on preservation, organization, description, and digitization work of the photography collections.

Why this matters

Readers in the Leiria-Fatima region now have access to a publication that preserves and disseminates the visual memory of the Sanctuary of Fatima, one of the world's major Catholic pilgrimage centers, offering a historical journey documented by images that witness the evolution of the sanctuary and the devotion of millions of faithful over more than a century.
