With the transfer market closed, the Benfica board led by Rui Costa turned all attention to renewing contracts of some players in the squad. The Eagles' SAD intends to protect the roster and one of the renewals is well underway.
According to newspaper Record, goalkeeper Samuel Soares, 24 years old, is close to extending his contract with Benfica, valid until the end of next season. Both parties are confident they will reach an agreement soon.
Initially, the goalkeeper was reluctant to renew, having expressed interest in leaving the Eagles at the beginning of pre-season if he wasn't a starter. However, Marco Silva's bet on the player removed all doubts from Samuel Soares, leaving him enthusiastic and facilitating the negotiation process.
The renewal process is now in the final phase and both parties expect a positive outcome soon. Samuel Soares, known as Samu, assumed the starting position in the Eagles' goal.
