Specialists on the hydrocarbon contamination process at the Lajes base, on the island of Terceira, do not believe it is possible to decontaminate soils and aquifers polluted over the past decades. The contamination is attributed to the United States of America.
Norberto Messias, a retired professor, was one of the specialists heard. According to him, the decontamination being done is only on paper, questioning the real effectiveness of the work carried out.
