The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) is moving forward with a set of legislative proposals to change the parental leave regime in Portugal. The main proposal aims to ensure full remuneration of the parental subsidy, meaning going from the current 80% to 100% of salary during the leave period.
The legislative initiative also provides for the extension of leave times for mothers and fathers, significantly modifying current rules. These changes aim to give families more time and more support during the first months of their children's lives.
The PCP's proposals are especially directed at situations of premature births and cases where there is hospitalization of the baby. In these specific circumstances, the party proposes reinforcement measures aimed at ensuring greater support and assistance for parents.
The party justifies these measures as necessary to ensure more dignified conditions for Portuguese families, arguing that the current parental leave system does not offer sufficient protection, particularly in situations of greater vulnerability such as prematurity or neonatal hospital admission.
