Treatment of erysipelas should begin at the first signs

Erysipelas is a bacterial infection that mainly affects the superficial dermis and lymphatic vessels. The disease can manifest rapidly, in one or two days, with an area of skin that is intensely red, warm, swollen and painful, and may be accompanied by fever, chills and malaise. Beta-hemolytic streptococci, including Streptococcus pyogenes, are among the most frequently associated agents with the infection.

In general, there is an entry point in the skin that allows the bacteria to enter, such as athlete's foot between the toes, heel fissure, abrasion, bite, trauma lesion, chronic wound or other disruption of the skin barrier. Factors such as chronic edema, venous or lymphatic insufficiency, obesity, diabetes, alterations of the skin barrier and previous episodes increase vulnerability to the disease.

The problem is that the first signs of erysipelas are still underestimated, and delaying medical evaluation can allow the infection to progress. Therefore, treatment should begin as soon as the first symptoms appear, avoiding complications.

Being beautiful (or not) is determinant for how we shape the destiny of each butterfly

An international study published in the journal Current Biology, with the participation of two Portuguese researchers, revealed that the "aesthetic bias" significantly influences the conservation of European butterflies. Through a survey with more than 21,000 responses, scientists created a Beauty Index for 492 species and discovered that butterflies with primary colors (blue and yellow), high contrasts, and elongated wings are considered more beautiful and, consequently, receive more funding, scientific research, and legal protection. However, the most discreet and least attractive species are often the most threatened with extinction, creating a contrast between perceived beauty and actual conservation risk. The researchers warn that decisions made decades ago continue to influence the distribution of resources, and suggest using the most beautiful species as "flagships" to also protect the habitats of less appealing species.
