Sustainable Pastoralism in Castilla y León: Strengthening Resilience against Forest Fires

In Burgos, in the Castilla y León region, a new approach to grazing management is transforming the relationship between farmers and field teams. This innovative model is based on long-term collaboration and incorporates practical solutions through contracts and silvopastoral planning, promoting a more modern and professional pastoralism.

One of the main changes was the replacement of pastoral burning with mechanical clearing of pastures, offering a sustainable alternative for local livestock farmers. This transition was made possible thanks to the ongoing involvement of technical teams that have been working with farmers for years to improve management practices.

The new techniques implemented include mechanical clearing to reduce fuel load, the construction of fences and water infrastructure that allow for more organized grazing, and community involvement to address the human causes of forest fires. Farmers are now recognized as active agents of change in the prevention process.

Efforts are also underway to regulate extensive grazing, investigate the origin of fires, and apply sanctions for uncontrolled burning. This transformation in Burgos serves as a model for other regions facing similar challenges in forest fire prevention.

The Calar Alto Observatory, in the province of Almería, Spain, recorded during the early mornings of September 10 and 11 three notable astronomical phenomena: two fireballs of cometary origin and a red "sprite".
