Minister Alexandre de Moraes, from the Supreme Federal Court, voted this Friday to uphold the conviction of former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro for coercing magistrates and orchestrating sanctions with the United States government against the Brazilian Judiciary. The son of former President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to four years and two months in initial semi-open regime, plus a fine of 100 minimum wages.
The vote was presented during the trial, in a virtual session, of the appeal in which Eduardo attempted to reduce the sentence imposed on him by the First Chamber of the STF. The defense argued that his conduct should be considered as "confessed" and that, therefore, the sentence should be lighter.
When analyzing the request, Moraes evaluated that, for confession to serve as a sentence mitigating factor, it needs to be spontaneous, carried out with the intention of collaborating with Justice and elucidating the truth of the facts. According to the minister, this did not happen in Eduardo Bolsonaro's case.
