PPM-Madeira issued a statement to criticize what it classifies as "the cynicism of the 230 deputies in the Assembly of the Republic." The island party deemed it necessary to speak out about the parliamentarians' conduct, pointing to an alleged hypocrisy in their behavior.
PPM-Madeira's criticism is based on a vote that took place on January 11, 2024. On that day, all 230 deputies in the Assembly of the Republic unanimously approved bill 999. This bill concerned an increase in the allowances attributed to the deputies themselves.
The Madeiran party expressed its displeasure at the parliamentarians' behavior, suggesting that the unanimous approval of this increase reveals a lack of scrupulosity on the part of the elected representatives. PPM-Madeira underscored the irony of the deputies approving a benefit for themselves without any opposition.
This position by PPM-Madeira comes as a form of political pressure on the deputies of the Republic, questioning the ethics and transparency of the legislative process that aims to increase the remuneration of the legislators themselves.
