'Portugal Democrático' Recovered as an Example of "Resistance Journalism"

dnoticias.pt11 September 2026 at 18:44

A newspaper forbidden in Portugal, produced thousands of kilometers away by Portuguese exiles, is the theme of a new book by Edgar Silva and Élvio Passos. The "Portugal Democrático" was created in Brazil in 1956 and published for almost two decades, allowing texts that the Estado Novo's censorship did not allow to be published to reach the Country.

The work was presented in Funchal, in the Municipal Assembly Chamber, as an example of the so-called "resistance journalism." The book studies this periodical that managed to circumvent the censorship of the Portuguese authoritarian regime for almost twenty years.

Edgar Silva and Élvio Passos are the authors of this study about the publication that represented an alternative voice for the Portuguese during the Estado Novo period, demonstrating how political exile allowed the debate and criticism that were silenced internally to remain alive.
