A wing of ministers defends closed session to Fachin to analyze Moraes' conduct, but Supreme Court president is in favor of open trial

oglobo11 September 2026 at 18:05

A wing of the Supreme Federal Court advocated to the president of the Court, Edson Fachin, that the extraordinary session scheduled for next Tuesday, the 15th, be held behind closed doors to analyze the developments in the case involving Justice Alexandre de Moraes and banker Daniel Vorcaro. The defense of a closed session comes from justices close to Moraes and was presented to Fachin during the consultations he has been conducting with members of the Court.

Fachin, however, is in favor of holding an open trial and may announce still this Friday the procedure that will be adopted by the plenary. Interlocutors say that, despite the pressure for a closed session, the president of the Supreme Court considers that the trial should be public. The final definition of the format has not yet been announced.

The president of the STF spent the last few days hearing individually from his colleagues precisely about the rite and the conduct of the extraordinary session. On Thursday, Justices Alexandre de Moraes, André Mendonça, and Dias Toffoli met with Fachin.

Montenegro says school "lost quality". But solutions...

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated in Setúbal that the Portuguese school has lost quality and rigor in recent years, supporting the diagnosis with the PISA 2025 results, and announced a 170 million euro package to modernize 35 schools in the Setúbal Peninsula, funded by the EIB, as well as 500 euro monthly incentives to attract 600 teachers to the region. However, experts warn that the measures lack legislative scheduling, that execution depends on annual budget allocation in the State Budget, and that structural reforms require parliamentary approval, while the restriction on mobile phone use remains without a defined regime. Montenegro's discourse softened within 48 hours, no longer attributing blame exclusively to previous governments, although experts dispute the use of PISA as a curriculum assessment, emphasizing that results depend on socioeconomic variables and that improving skills takes about a decade to produce effects.
