The Netherlands and Spain are advocating for a European minimum age for access to social media. The two countries want the measure to be harmonized and imposed by the European Union, rather than being left to the discretion of each member state.
The European Commission is expected to announce next week a ban on social media for users below a certain age. This ban is part of a broader set of measures to protect minors in the digital environment.
In addition to social media, the Netherlands and Spain want the minimum age to be extended to video games and artificial intelligence chatbots, thus broadening the scope of protection for young Europeans in the digital space.
