"We will never forget. That is why we fight today": Trump looks to September 11 and says the US has no other "choice"

CNN Portugal11 September 2026 at 17:05

Donald Trump took advantage of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks to deliver a speech in which he associated the memory of the victims with current American foreign policy, particularly in relation to Iran. The President of the United States stated that Americans "will never forget" what happened that day and that this memory is the reason they continue to fight today, suggesting that current threats require the same determination.

In his speech, Trump indicated that the United States has no choice but to face contemporary geopolitical challenges. The reference to Iran was the central element of his message, at a time when tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, particularly due to the Iranian nuclear program and Iran's support for armed groups in the region.

The event commemorated the nearly three thousand victims of the attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda under Osama bin Laden, which shook the United States and profoundly altered the country's security policy in the following decades. Trump's speech sought to establish a continuity between the American response to terrorism at the time and the current stance against what he considers to be similar threats.
