The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) began judging this Friday the registration request of former governor Anthony Garotinho (Republicanos) for governor of the state. The trial examines whether Garotinho meets the conditions to run for election given a final conviction for administrative impropriety that determined the suspension of his political rights for eight years.
The candidate did not attend the plenary session and, at home, made a live broadcast on Instagram. During the live stream, Garotinho stated that if his registration is denied by the Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro, he will appeal to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
The Electoral Public Ministry maintained a position against Garotinho's candidacy, arguing that the conviction for administrative impropriety prevents the electoral dispute. The case involves the final conviction that suspended the political rights of the former governor for a period of eight years.
