The Alternative for Germany party (AfD) announced it will file a lawsuit against Chancellor Friedrich Merz, following accusations made by him in Parliament.
Merz stated in the Chamber that the AfD's "remigration" policy is effectively synonymous with "ethnic cleansing based on the origin and skin color" of citizens.
The chancellor's comment was directed at the far-right party during the parliamentary debate, at a time of strong political tension between the government and the opposition.
The AfD's decision to sue Merz comes as a response to statements it considers defamatory, intensifying the political conflict between the governing bloc and the main opposition party in Germany.
