A Portuguese Company is Transforming Camões, Amadeo and the Douro into Dance

Ballet do Douro is a Portuguese dance company based in Vila Nova de Gaia that is transforming elements of Portuguese culture into raw material for its artistic creations. Four years after its official debut, the company announced plans to establish Portuguese culture as one of the central pillars of its artistic identity. The 2026/27 season will be presented with new productions that explore these cultural roots. Among the sources of inspiration are Camões, the national poet, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, one of the most important Portuguese modernist painters, and the Douro River, a fundamental geographic and cultural element of the northern region of the country. The company thus intends to consolidate its positioning in the Portuguese dance landscape, combining tradition and contemporary creation.
