STF saved Brazil's democracy, but now 'smothers' it through corruption, says Economist

oglobo11 September 2026 at 13:01

The magazine The Economist published an article on Thursday stating that the Supreme Federal Court (STF) "saved" Brazilian democracy by holding former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) accountable for planning a coup d'état after the 2022 elections. However, the publication argues that the Court is now "at the center of a sordid and ever-expanding corruption scandal."

The magazine situates Justice Alexandre de Moraes "at the center of everything," as the rapporteur of the coup plot case at the STF. The article questions the magistrate's actions, especially in the fake news inquiry, which resulted in the removal of Bolsonarista profiles on social media.

According to The Economist, the investigation "continues to this day, making it impossible to know how many accounts Mr. Moraes has censored," which raises questions about the powers exercised by the justice within the Court.

The publication concludes that defenders of democracy in Brazil have become a threat, pointing to the need for debate about the balance of powers in the country.
