IPCA stays at -0.32% in August, after a slight increase of 0.07% in July, says IBGE

The Full Consumer Price Index (IPCA), Brazil's official inflation index, recorded deflation of 0.32% in August, according to data from IBGE released this Friday. In July, the indicator had shown a slight increase of 0.07%.

The drop in prices was already expected by analysts, with electricity costs being the main highlight of decline in the period. This reduction is related to the distribution of the so-called "Itaipu Bonus," approved by Aneel in early July.

The electric sector regulatory agency approved the distribution of R$ 872 million referring to the Itaipu Bonus of 2025. This bonus is an amount distributed to electricity consumers when there is a positive balance in the commercialization account of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant, controlled by Brazil and Paraguay.

In practice, the distribution of the bonus occurs in the form of a credit on consumers' electricity bills who are entitled to the discounts.
