Twenty artists gathered on Thursday in Shanksville, in the American state of Pennsylvania, to create portraits of the 40 passengers and crew who died on board United Airlines Flight 93 during the September 11 attacks. The initiative marked the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
The portraits were created in chalk and represent each of the victims of Flight 93, which was one of four planes hijacked that day. Flight 93 crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers attempted to regain control of the aircraft from the hijackers.
The artworks will be integrated into a memorial in honor of the victims of what was the only one of the four hijacked planes that did not reach its original target, believed to be the White House or the Capitol, due to the passengers' revolt.
The Flight 93 memorial already exists in Shanksville as a pilgrimage site for victims' families and for Americans who wish to pay tribute to the heroes who confronted the hijackers.
