Vila Viçosa's nomination for UNESCO World Heritage status has entered a new phase after representatives of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) conducted the technical on-site assessment. During the mission, spaces within the nominated area were visited and the necessary elements for preparing the technical reports were collected, which will be sent to UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The content of the observations produced is not publicly known.
The final decision on the inscription of Vila Viçosa on the World Heritage List is expected at the 49th session of the World Heritage Committee, scheduled for Istanbul, Turkey, between June 27 and July 7, 2027. A new technical meeting is also planned, initially slated for November but which may take place in December, with the participation of the Vice President of the Municipal Council, Tiago Salgueiro, and members of the technical team of the nomination.
The nomination has been on the Portuguese Tentative List since January 31, 2017, under the designation "Vila Viçosa, Renaissance ducal town," encompassing the historic center of the town and the Tapada Real (Royal Hunting Grounds), a territory that also extends into the municipalities of Borba and Elvas. The proposal is based on the historical and heritage value associated with Renaissance urbanism, the connection to the House of Braganza, the presence of marble in architecture and public spaces, and the uniqueness of the Tapada Real.
The ICOMOS technical opinion is relevant to the assessment of the nomination, but the decision rests with the World Heritage Committee. The on-site assessment does not constitute a classification nor does it allow for anticipating the direction of the decision, although the absence of another Portuguese nomination for 2026 is considered a favorable element in Vila Viçosa's trajectory.
