USA marks 25 years since September 11 attacks

The United States of America marks today 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which caused nearly three thousand deaths in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, altering the international political and security landscape. The attacks, claimed by the extremist organization Al-Qaeda and led by Osama Bin Laden, began at 8:46 AM (local time), when the first plane was deliberately diverted and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Minutes later, a second plane struck the South Tower, while another aircraft was directed toward the Pentagon in Washington. The fourth plane, believed to have been targeting the White House or the Capitol, ended up crashing in a field in Pennsylvania after an attempt by passengers to regain control. The attacks caused nearly three thousand deaths, including the 19 hijackers, and led to two decades of military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
