Microsoft wants to triple data center capacity by 2032

Jornal Económico11 September 2026 at 09:39

Microsoft has plans to more than triple its data center capacity, going from the current 12 gigawatts to 38 gigawatts by 2032, according to the Bloomberg news agency.

Currently, about two gigawatts of the available 12 gigawatts are used for the artificial intelligence sector. By 2032, this value is expected to rise to about one third of the 38 gigawatts the company aims to have.

The plan covers Microsoft's own and leased data centers, excluding capacity leased from cloud providers. The increase in capacity comes after the company temporarily paused the development of some data centers in 2025, due to concerns about oversizing.

This lack of response led companies to have to look for other options besides Microsoft. One case was the e-commerce company Temu, which ended up signing a contract with Oracle.
