The Order of Physicians presents today, in Guarda, a study with proposals to solve the difficulties of retaining physicians in underserved areas. The Madeira archipelago appears identified among the 11 areas of the country with the greatest difficulty in retaining these health professionals.
The organization warns that Portugal has responded insufficiently to the problems of retaining physicians in territories with low population density, using only "scattered, temporary, and reactive measures".
The Order of Physicians intends to counteract this trend with concrete proposals in the various areas identified as problematic, aiming to create solutions that go beyond the piecemeal responses that have been adopted until now.
The study, which the Lus agency had access to, will be officially presented today in Guarda, at a time when the shortage of physicians in various regions of the country continues to represent a significant challenge for the Portuguese health system.
