NATO blocked Russian plan to use secret weapon against submarine cables in the Arctic

ZAP Notícias11 September 2026 at 07:40

NATO managed to block a Russian plan that involved the use of a secret weapon against essential submarine cables in the Arctic. The discovery was made months after the United Kingdom and Norway had publicly revealed that they had detected a secret Russian operation in Arctic waters.

According to officials cited by Reuters, Russian submarines were training in the use of a weapon specifically designed to disable communication submarine cables without leaving any trace, which made the operation particularly difficult to detect.

The Russian clandestine operation was conducted by GUGI, Moscow's submarine warfare directorate, using deep-sea submersibles to simulate attacks. A joint operation by the United Kingdom, Norway and the United States tracked and directly confronted the Russian vessels at sea, managing to frustrate the plan.
