China arrests internet users for criticism and "rumors" about floods in Tibet

dnoticias.pt11 September 2026 at 08:19

Chinese police announced administrative sanctions against eight netizens for posts related to floods that hit Nepal and the Tibetan county of Gyirong in August, in the Tibet region. The punished posts included messages about the causes of the floods and criticism of rescue operations.

Tibet's Internet Police published on Thursday six "typical cases" as part of a campaign against "disaster rumors." The campaign involved interventions by police forces from Tibet and other Chinese provinces.

Chinese authorities are suppressing online freedom of expression, especially regarding sensitive topics such as natural disasters and government operations in the Tibet region. The Tibet autonomous region is known for having severe restrictions on freedom of information and communication, particularly regarding topics related to the Chinese government and regional issues.
