Tension between independents ends with three arrested and photojournalist assaulted in Catalonia

Euronews Portugal11 September 2026 at 06:29

Tensions between independents culminated in confrontations that resulted in three arrests and the assault of a photojournalist in Catalonia. The incidents occurred on the eve of Diada, Catalonia's National Day, when groups with opposing positions regarding independism came face to face.

The presence of Sílvia Orriols and her political party, Aliança Catalana, at the Diada celebration was the triggering element of the confrontations. Aliança Catalana is a far-right formation, which provoked the reaction of other organizations.

Several anti-fascist organizations pledged a gathering against the presence of the far right, resulting in the confrontations that led to the arrests and the assault of the photojournalist. The tension between independents from different ideological currents thus marked the eve of Catalonia's National Day.
