Carlos III University proposed applying the high-performance athletes program to Leonor, but the Zarzuela rejected it

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General11 September 2026 at 06:28

After the announcement in April that Princess Leonor would study Political Science at Carlos III University of Madrid, the university center began debating how to reconcile her academic life with an institutional schedule that would inevitably cause some absences from classes. The university sought to find formulas to justify these absences in light of the attendance requirements demanded by the institution.

Among the solutions considered, a particularly unique proposal emerged: applying the support program for high-level and high-performance athletes (DAN/DAR) to Princess Leonor. This idea would allow her institutional commitments to be compatible with university attendance, according to information obtained by EL PERIÓDICO.

The proposal was presented by the faculty during one of the internal meetings held before the start of the academic year. However, this solution ultimately did not proceed. The Palace of La Zarzuela, which represents the Spanish Royal House, rejected the measure, preventing its implementation.

The decision of the Palace of La Zarzuela indicates that the solution found to reconcile the studies of the heir to the Spanish crown with her institutional obligations will have to go through other mechanisms, different from the program reserved for high-performance athletes.
