California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, signed on Thursday a set of historic laws that prohibit social media platforms from offering addictive features to minors under 16. This legislation represents the first of its kind in the United States.

The new laws aim to protect young people from the potential negative effects of social media features that can generate addiction, such as recommendation algorithms and notification systems designed to keep users engaged.

The measure places California at the forefront of social media regulation in the United States, establishing a precedent that could influence other states to adopt similar legislation to protect minors in the digital environment.

Newsom indicated that these laws are part of a broader effort to hold big tech companies accountable for their practices targeting children and adolescents.
