The Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, today criticized in parliament measures that may have a "pull effect" on migrants. The head of Portuguese diplomacy was speaking during a parliamentary hearing at the European Affairs Committee.
Rangel was alluding to the extraordinary regularization of hundreds of thousands of immigrants promoted by the Spanish Government, referring to the situation in Ceuta. The minister insisted that the entry of thousands of people in that Spanish city in July did not threaten the Schengen area.
Paulo Rangel's intervention in parliament came in the context of a debate on European migration policy, where the Portuguese official sought to clarify Portugal's position regarding migratory flows at the southern border of Europe.
