The International Monetary Fund abandoned the nomination of Portuguese economist Ricardo Reis, a professor at the London School of Economics, for the position of chief economist after the IMF became aware of critical statements he made about the trade tariffs adopted by the Donald Trump administration. The institution, based in Washington, was already preparing to announce Reis's selection to lead the research department and occupy the position of economic counselor at the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, but unexpectedly backed down from the decision. According to sources cited by the Financial Times, the last-minute change occurred after the IMF reviewed previous statements by Reis in which he criticized Trump's tariffs. In July, the IMF ultimately named Silvana Tenreyro, a former member of the monetary policy committee of the Bank of England, to the position.
