The Regional Government of the Azores approved a support package worth 6.5 million euros aimed at compensating fishermen who were harmed by the creation of protected marine areas in the region. The support was approved specifically for fishermen who carry out their activity in the area of the Azores Marine Park. The regional executive considered this measure as a long-term strategic investment directed at the affected fishing professionals. This decision comes in a context of expansion of protected marine areas in the Azores, which has limited the traditional fishing zones of local professionals.
