Around 40 children from Avis, in the district of Portalegre, will receive olive oil produced by an olive tree planted in their name until they turn 18. The initiative results from a protocol established between agricultural engineer and young farmer João Varela, 30 years old, from the village of Ervedal, in the municipality of Avis, and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Avis.
The project consists of planting an olive tree for each participating child, who will then receive the olive oil produced from their own olive tree. João Varela explained to the Lusitanian news agency (Lusa) that he started his project as a young farmer last year.
The partnership with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Avis aims to promote children's contact with agricultural activity and the olive-growing tradition of the region, while creating a lasting bond with the territory where they live. The young farmer is supported by his family in implementing this initiative.
