The arrival of Metrobus in Coimbra-B and Praça da República brought a new traffic organization to the city of students. This change in the public transport system prompted a complete restructuring of traffic circulation in the central zone of the city.
Rua da Sofia, one of the main arteries of Coimbra's lower city, no longer has cars passing through. The road, which was previously crossed by considerable automobile traffic, was transformed into a pedestrian zone.
With this change, the city gained more space for people to walk. The defenders of this change believe the measure could benefit local commerce, by making the area more accessible and attractive to citizens.
